NRI PAN Card: How to Apply, Update & Use from Abroad 2026
Why NRIs Need a PAN Card
A Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is mandatory for NRIs who have any financial dealings in India. Without a PAN card, NRIs face TDS at the maximum rate (often 30%+) on all Indian income, cannot open NRE/NRO accounts at many banks, cannot buy or sell property in India, and cannot file income tax returns.
When is PAN Mandatory for NRIs?
- Buying or selling property in India
- Opening NRE, NRO, or FCNR bank accounts
- Investing in Indian mutual funds or stocks
- Receiving rental income from Indian property
- Claiming TDS refunds
- Filing income tax returns in India
- Taking NRI home loans or business loans in India
How NRIs Can Apply for PAN Card from Abroad
NRIs can apply for a PAN card online through two authorised agencies:
- NSDL (Protean): Visit onlineservices.nsdl.com — select Form 49A (Indian citizens) or Form 49AA (foreign citizens of Indian origin)
- UTIITSL: Visit pan.utiitsl.com
Documents required:
- Proof of identity: Passport
- Proof of address: Overseas address proof (utility bill, bank statement, or driving licence)
- Proof of date of birth: Passport or birth certificate
- Passport-size photograph
The PAN card can be delivered to an overseas address or to an Indian address of your choice.
How to Update Your PAN Card (Name, Address, Photo)
NRIs can update PAN details online through NSDL or UTIITSL by submitting a correction form with supporting documents. Common updates include address change after relocation, name change after marriage, and photo update.
PAN Card for OCI Card Holders
OCI card holders should apply using Form 49AA (for foreign nationals). OCI card holders have the same PAN requirements as NRIs for property purchase, investments, and banking in India.
