NRI Mutual Funds India: SIP, ELSS & Repatriation Guide 2026
Can NRIs Invest in Indian Mutual Funds?
Yes. NRIs can invest in Indian mutual funds subject to FEMA regulations and the fund house's policies. Most major Indian AMCs (Asset Management Companies) accept NRI investments, though some restrict investments from US and Canada-based NRIs due to FATCA/FBAR compliance complexity.
Types of Mutual Funds NRIs Can Invest In
- Equity funds: Large cap, mid cap, small cap, flexi cap
- ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme): Tax-saving funds with 3-year lock-in; eligible for Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakhs
- Debt funds: Liquid funds, short-term funds, gilt funds
- Hybrid funds: Balanced advantage, aggressive hybrid
- Index funds & ETFs: Nifty 50, Sensex, sectoral ETFs
NRI Mutual Fund KYC Requirements
NRIs must complete KYC (Know Your Customer) before investing:
- Valid passport (identity proof)
- Overseas address proof (utility bill, bank statement)
- PAN card
- NRE or NRO bank account details
- FATCA/CRS declaration (mandatory)
KYC can be completed online through CAMS, KFintech, or directly with the AMC.
NRE vs NRO Account for Mutual Fund Investment
- NRE account: Investment is fully repatriable; returns can be sent back abroad freely
- NRO account: Investment is non-repatriable (subject to USD 1 million/year limit); suitable for reinvesting Indian income
SIP for NRIs
NRIs can set up Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) in Indian mutual funds. SIP amounts are debited from the NRE or NRO account on a fixed date each month. SIPs can be paused or stopped at any time.
Tax on NRI Mutual Fund Returns
- Equity funds (held 12+ months): LTCG taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh/year
- Equity funds (held under 12 months): STCG taxed at 20%
- Debt funds: Gains taxed as per income tax slab (added to income)
- ELSS: Same as equity funds; Section 80C deduction available
TDS is deducted at source on mutual fund redemptions for NRIs. Excess TDS can be claimed as refund by filing ITR.
US & Canada NRI Restrictions
Many Indian AMCs do not accept investments from US and Canada-based NRIs due to FATCA compliance burden. Exceptions include a few AMCs like SBI MF, UTI MF, and PPFAS. Check with the specific AMC before investing.
