NRI EPF Withdrawal: Rules, TDS & Process for Returning NRIs 2026
What Happens to EPF When You Become an NRI?
If you worked in India before moving abroad, your Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) balance continues to earn interest even after you become an NRI. You do not need to withdraw it immediately. The EPF account remains active and earns the declared interest rate (currently 8.25% p.a. for 2023-24).
When Can NRIs Withdraw EPF?
- After 2 months of unemployment: If you left your Indian job and have been unemployed for 2+ months, you can withdraw the full EPF balance
- At age 58: Full withdrawal allowed at retirement age
- Partial withdrawal: Allowed for specific purposes (medical, housing, education) subject to conditions
- After returning to India permanently: Can withdraw after 2 months of leaving employment
TDS on EPF Withdrawal for NRIs
TDS rules on EPF withdrawal:
- If withdrawn before 5 years of continuous service: TDS at 30% for NRIs (vs 10% for residents)
- If withdrawn after 5 years of continuous service: No TDS; amount is tax-free
- If withdrawn due to ill health, employer closure, or reasons beyond control: Tax-free regardless of service period
How to Withdraw EPF as an NRI
- Activate your UAN (Universal Account Number) on the EPFO member portal
- Link your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account to UAN
- Submit online withdrawal claim through the EPFO member portal
- For NRIs: bank account must be an NRO account (NRE accounts are not accepted for EPF credit)
- Amount is credited within 15-20 working days
EPF Transfer vs Withdrawal
If you plan to return to India and work again, consider transferring your EPF to your new employer rather than withdrawing. This preserves the 5-year service continuity for tax-free withdrawal later.
