NRI Aadhaar Card: Rules, Exemptions & How to Get One 2026

Can NRIs Get an Aadhaar Card?

Yes — but with conditions. As per the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, NRIs who hold a valid Indian passport and have been resident in India for 182 days or more in the 12 months immediately preceding the date of application are eligible to enrol for Aadhaar.

When Are NRIs Exempt from Aadhaar?

NRIs who do not meet the 182-day residency requirement are exempt from mandatory Aadhaar linkage for most financial services. Key exemptions include:

  • NRI bank accounts (NRE, NRO, FCNR) — Aadhaar not mandatory
  • NRI home loans — Aadhaar not mandatory; PAN and passport suffice
  • NRI mutual fund investments — Aadhaar not mandatory for KYC
  • NRI income tax filing — Aadhaar-PAN linking not mandatory for NRIs

When Do NRIs Need Aadhaar?

  • After returning to India and becoming a resident (RNOR or Resident status)
  • For government subsidies and welfare schemes
  • For some state government services in Kerala
  • For mobile SIM cards in India (if staying long-term)

How to Enrol for Aadhaar After Returning to India

  1. Visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised enrolment centre
  2. Carry your Indian passport as proof of identity and address
  3. Provide biometric data (fingerprints, iris scan, photograph)
  4. Aadhaar is issued within 90 days of enrolment

Aadhaar-PAN Linking for Returning NRIs

Once you become a resident of India (after spending 182+ days), you must link your Aadhaar with PAN. Failure to link results in PAN becoming inoperative, which affects banking, investments, and tax filing. The deadline for linking is typically March 31 of the relevant financial year.

OCI Card Holders & Aadhaar

OCI card holders are treated as NRIs for Aadhaar purposes. They are not eligible for Aadhaar enrolment unless they meet the 182-day residency requirement in India.

NRI Financial Services Without Aadhaar

NRIs can access all major financial services in India — home loans, business loans, NRE/NRO accounts, property purchase — without Aadhaar. PAN card and passport are the primary KYC documents. Blueberry FM facilitates NRI home loans and business loans in Kerala with standard NRI documentation.
